Give a caregiver some free time by providing respite
Some caregivers don’t get the down time they need to take a worry-free walk, visit a friend or go to the store. Our respite volunteers give caregivers some free time and also benefit people with early stage memory loss through conversation, companionship and engaging activities. Teach health & wellness classes
Train to become a SAIL instructor! SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life) focuses on improving strength, balance, and fitness to help older adults maintain their independence and reduce the risk of falls. Volunteers are needed to instruct classes, up to 2x/week, for 1-hour per class. Physical endurance and mental capacity to lead group exercise class is a must. Teach tai chi!
Tai chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention (TCAFP) Lead classes to help individuals with arthritis or at risk of falls improve balance, strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Volunteers are needed to instruct classes 2x/week, for 45–60-minutes. There are 16 classes in the tai chi series. Physical endurance and mental capacity to lead group exercise class. Tai chi is a fall prevention class, with emphasis on balance. Tai chi training and CPR certification is provided. Monroe County only. Teach Otago classes!
Lead balance/strength training classes that help older adults reduce the risk of falls. Volunteers will lead participants through strength training exercises with ankle weights. Become a certified Ombudsman.
Caring individuals are always needed to volunteer as Ombudsmen in area nursing and adult homes. Lifespan provides the training necessary to become a NYS Certified Ombudsman. There is an application and training process to become an Ombudsman. Needed in multiple counties. Help with financial management tasks.
Visit with an older adult once a month to help with bill paying/check writing, submitting insurance claims, balancing checkbook, etc. Needed in multiple counties. To learn more, call us at 585-244-8400.
Give someone a lift!
Volunteer drivers are needed to take older adults and people with disabilities to medical and other appointments. We provide training and partial mileage reimbursement (if you are 55 or older). To learn more, call 585-244-8400, ext. 211 or email givealift@lifespanrochester.org
Take the confusion out of Medicare.
Help with Medicare information and guidance by training to become a health insurance specialist. Time commitment is a minimum of three hours a week. More time may be necessary the open enrollment season from October- December. Our volunteers cannot hold or have held a license to sell Medicare Insurance. Volunteer are needed in Monroe and Livingston counties. To learn more call 585-287-6413.
Help someone live healthier!
Become a peer leader for our Living Healthy workshops. You'll be trained to help other older adults learn to take charge of chronic conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure and chronic pain.
