Long-term Care Advocacy

Nursing Home Ombudsman Program

Lifespan’s Ombudsman Program mediates patient care issues in long term care facilities in Monroe, Ontario, Genesee and Livingston counties.

Ombudsmen are trained, independent volunteers who are assigned to long-term care facilities. Ombudsmen listen, mediate, negotiate, propose and facilitate solutions to residents' concerns and problems. They help residents and families learn to advocate for themselves.

"I have a dear aunt in a nursing home who is becoming very handicapped from dementia. My life saver throughout this last year has been your Ombudsman who visits regularly. Since we're absent six months each year, our worries ease knowing that John is checking on the important problems of daily living and also the little pleasures like my aunt having grapefruit for breakfast. We are so grateful knowing John is involved. The Ombudsman program is very special." A caregiver
